German, Alex (2026) Association between prior obesity and development of diabetes mellitus in dogs and cats: a case-control study: research datasets. [Data Collection]
Description
Data supporting a case-control study on the association of obesity and diabetes in dogs and cats. Study abstract as follows: Background: There is an association between obesity and diabetes mellitus (DM) in cats, but whether a similar association exists in dogs remains controversial. Objectives: To investigate potential associations between prior obesity and DM in dogs and cats. Animals: 9,082 dogs and 3,256 cats with DM from veterinary practices across North America. Methods: Electronic health records were retrospectively filtered for diabetic dogs and cats whose first visit was between 1.5y and 5y and 1y and 7y, respectively, and with ≥2 further visits over ≥4y. Using bootstrap-matching, 3 controls per case were selected, matched for breed, sex, neuter status and age. Final matched control datasets comprised 24,284 dogs and 8,409 cats, with a similar follow up and visit frequency. Body condition score categories (underweight, ideal weight, overweight and obese) were constructed based on bodyweight changes during adulthood. The median body condition (mBC) category was also determined. Statistical analyses comprised odds ratios (OR) with 95% confidence intervals (95%-CI), and logistic regression. Results: In dogs, a positive association existed between mBC and subsequent DM for both the overweight (OR 2.27; 95%-CI 2.14, 2.41; P<.001) and obese (OR 4.01; 95%-CI 3.75, 4.29; P<.001) categories. Associations in cats were marginally weaker (overweight OR 1.79, 95%-CI 1.62, 1.98, P<.001; obese OR 2.59; 95%-CI 2.31, 2.91, P<.001). A positive association also existed between proportion of the monitoring period spent in obese condition and odds of future DM. Conclusions and Clinical Importance: Strong temporal associations exist between prior obesity and the development of DM in pet dogs and cats. Two datasets are included: - cat_data (data from cat cases and controls). - dog_data (data from dog cases and controls. These datasets include all data from the study animals including cases and controls that were used in the statistical analyses supporting the study.
